鬼谷子（西元前400—西元前320年），姓王，名詡，又名王禪、王利，號玄微子。鬼谷子是春秋戰國時期道家代表人物、縱橫家的鼻祖，鬼谷子常入山采藥修道。因隱居鬼谷，故自稱鬼谷先生。“王禪老祖”是後人對鬼谷子的稱呼，為老學五派之一。“老學，蘇、張( 指蘇秦和張儀) 、鬼谷一派，申、韓一派，楊朱一派，莊、列一派，關尹、尹文一派。 ” 鬼谷子，又名捭闔策。據傳是由鬼谷先生後學者根據先生言論整理而成。該書側重於權謀策略及言談辯論技巧。鬼谷子共有十四篇，其中第十三、十四篇已失傳。
