We translate the word "philanthropy" from the Greek noun "Philokalia", which means: love for the beautiful, sublime, good. Most directly, it contains the explanation of the hidden life in the Lord Jesus Christ. The secret true Christian life in our Lord Jesus Christ is seasoned, developed and perfected by the blessing of God the Father, by the effect of the grace of the Holy Spirit which, according to each individual, is present in Christians, under the leadership of Christ the Lord himself, who promised to be with us all the days, and that inseparably.
The grace of God calls everyone to such a life. It is not only accessible to everyone, but also obligatory, since it contains the essence of Christianity. Not all who are invited participate in it, just as not all who participate in it are its sharers to the same extent. The chosen go deep into it, climbing high on its steps.
Its forms, as well as the richness of the areas in which it is revealed, are no less abundant and diverse than the manifestation of ordinary life. And if it were possible to clearly understand and express everything that happens in it and everything that is inseparable from the truth of life according to God: enemy attacks and temptations, struggle and opposition, falls and rising, sprouting and strengthening of various phenomena of spiritual life, degrees of general progress and the state of mind and heart that corresponds to each of them, the mutual effect of grace and freedom, the feeling of the nearness and distance of God, the feeling of omnipotent consideration and complete and irreversible surrender of oneself to the Lord's right hand, with the renunciation of all one's own ways of acting and with constant and strained action - one would get an attractive as well as an instructive picture, similar to the representation of a world journey.
Travelers usually write notes while traveling about anything worth noting. God's chosen ones who in their arduous journey in various directions walked all the paths of spiritual life also left their notes. Certainly, the importance of both types of travelogue is not equal.
Those who do not have the opportunity to travel can acquire approximately accurate ideas about distant countries and without moving from a place, that is. by means of reading the travel notes of other travelers, since the life forms of the entire creation are more or less similar to each other, no matter in which country they manifested themselves. However, this is not the case for the experience of spiritual life. Only those who travel themselves can understand him. For those who have not stepped on it, it remains a completely unknown science. And even those who have entered his scene cannot immediately understand him. Their concepts and representations become clearer as they progress in their journey and delve into the realm of the spirit. Correspondingly with the multiplication of personal experiences of the spiritual life, the apparitions of the holy fathers become clearer and more comprehensible for them.
After all, the presentation of various phenomena of spiritual life, which are contained in the Holy Father's writings, is not without significance for all Christians in general. From it, everyone can understand that there are even higher forms of life than the one in which man can find himself and with which his Christian conscience can otherwise be reconciled, namely that there are even higher degrees of perfection that should be strived for and to which man can climb. By providing such an understanding, it will surely arouse a zeal for advancement, drawing towards better than what one possesses. (Saint Theophan the Prisoner)
