The first budgie was brought to Europe by an English ornithologist named John Gould in 1840, and the first captive breeding of the budgie began just a decade later during the early 1850s.

The budgerigar’s scientific name is Melopsittacus undulatus. The first part, Melopsittacus, is Greek and means “melodious parrot,”. The second part, undulatus, is Latin and means “wave-patterned” or “undulated.”
